King was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the Reverend Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. King's mother named him Michael, which was entered onto the birth certificate. In 1934, the elder King adopted the name Martin Luther King Sr. in honor of the German Protestant religious leader Martin Luther. In due time, Michael Jr. would follow his father's lead and adopt the name himself. King's birth certificate was altered to "Martin Luther King Jr." on July 23, 1957, when he was 28 years old.
