Who recorded the 1991 grunge classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit?”
Nirvana
One of Nirvana’s biggest hits, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind. The unexpected success of the song in 1992, is often marked as the point where grunge entered the mainstream. Dubbed an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was voted #9 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Eventually, Kurt Cobain grew uncomfortable with the song's success and, in later concerts, often excluded it from the set list.
